Hi! Just wanting a bit of advice, since leaving college I'm at a bit of a loss for what to do next, so far I've just found my self stuck in retail. I've got a great passion for music, I go to gigs on a regular basis ( all wages go towards them ) and in my spare time I just listen to album after album. Any ideas about trying to go forward in the music industry?

That’s a tough question, because there are so many facets of the industry that you could aim yourself at. My advice would be to work out something you want to do - book bands? Promote shows? Work in legal? Work at a label? Work in distribution? Deal with publishing? Write? Take photos? Manage bands? Run a merch company? Design? PR? - and find out people who do exactly that. Then hit them up directly (and personally, none of that ‘Dear Sir’ shit, know who you’re talking to) and ask for specific advice. The more you know about what it is you want to do, the better your chances will be.

It’s important to know as much as possible about the world you want to go into. And some things are universal across all disciplines: don’t be a prick, don’t be lazy [INCREDIBLY important, this - so, so, so many people want an easy ride and aren’t willing to put the hours in], be prepared to work a hell of a lot, be polite, take things seriously,

Hope that helps. Anything more, ask again!
